Sur le pont d'Avignon

Sur le pont d'Avignon Video Clips. Duration : 1.18 Mins.

Here's a 15th-century French folk tune popular with children, Sur le pont d'Avignon (ie, On Avignon Bridge), in the key of F major, on my great grandfather's C/F accordion. The accordion is in slight need of repair, as one of the reeds in the high C button isn't firing. So if that note sounds a bit off, that's why. :-) This tune has a completely straightforward bass pattern. The challenge with this one was my choosing to switch octaves between verses. Not only do you need to learn to move your hand the right distance up and down, but the actual fingering is different between the two octaves. If I ever go to Avignon, France, I will dance on the bridge. Interestingly, the actual bridge (Pont Saint-Bénezet) is not large enough for the kind of dancing referred to in the song. But there's an island under the bridge that was a traditional place for dancing. So it's likely that the song was originally "*Sous* le pont d'Avignon", ie, *under* the Avignon bridge. I first heard this song on an episode of the Polka Dot Door, and never forgot it. English Translation/Traduction anglaise: On the bridge of Avignon There we dance, there ...
